(Industrial Age) How did large corporations try to control competition?

Can't find the answer in this G-Forsaken book...(Industrial Age) How did large corporations try to control competition?
They basically monopolized it in The united states. People like Rockefeller and Carnegie basically took control of all production, by buying out all their competitors. They also bought all aspects and resources needed for their products. they also took advantage of cheap labor and controlled politics to their own gain.
